The History of
The Angel Trees
Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army’s highest profile Christmas efforts.
The Angel Tree was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 in Lynchburg, Virginia in a shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmastime.
The program got its name because the wishes of local children were written on greeting cards featuring pictures of angels, and placed on a Christmas Tree at the mall. More than 700 children had a brighter Christmas that year.
Three years later in Nashville, Tennessee, WSM Radio, which airs the Grand Ol’ Opry, came on board as the first Angel Giving Tree sponsor in the United States.
Because of the on-air promotion on WSM, as well as national publicity on CNN and The Larry King Show, news of the Angel Giving Tree spread across the country like wildfire.
Since that time, the program has grown to include Angel Trees across the nation, in shopping malls, and on-site at businesses, churches, clubs and organizations.
